The Wonder Child – Chapter One – Speed Dating

Hurried voices could be heard from all directions, papers flying around the air like planes and the distinct smell of chlorine was present in the office.

“Are you sure these two are the ones we need?”  A masculine voice had uttered.

“Positive.” The other masculine voice, but very hoarse, had answered.

The first one who spoke took the two pictures of the ones that they had discussed and passed them on to the secretary, who had made letters to these two. The letter told them that they had been selected for a special programme and must move to Crick Cabana in Willow Creek. No other information was given. Even the slight detail that another person was going to be there.

Two weeks later…

Athena Godfrey, a hopeless romantic, arrived at the scene of Crick Cabana. She was told in the letter that luggage was not necessary as all clothing was packed and provided inside of the house. Athena looked into the letterbox to find a phone and some starting money inside, as she was instructed to do.

“Awesome!” Athena celebrated. She pocketed the starting money and turned on the phone and placed it into her pocket.

Athena turned her head towards the front door and saw that it was open, recently seeing Frozen, she just couldn’t resist.

“LOVE IS AN OPEN DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!” Athena sung at the top of her voice.

Unbeknownst to Athena, a man was actually through the open door!  As soon as that happened, Athena received a text message on that new phone she has received.

“Good Morning Athena Godfrey. You have been chosen as the best of the genetic mix for women to participate in the Wonder Child Project. You’ve always longed for a child and a husband of your own, and now you have the solution in your hands. It’s just a small mile away.

We have chosen you a suitable breeding partner, Orion Frenlore. We’re sure that you will find him to be to your satisfaction. Orion knows of this project and of yourself so there is no need for secrecy between the two of you. Both of your personalities compliment each other’s and your child will possess special qualities.

Your job is to blend in with the residents, have a job, make some friends. Most importantly however, you must have a child and you must devote your lives to raising this child as it will become very important to our future. Give it every skill, give it all the knowledge you possess, it will remember everything.

HOWEVER, no one must know that this project is happening in your home. People will try to take your child away from you and you must keep this child safe until it reaches Young Adulthood, where it will be trained in our government.

Thank you for your co-operation.”

Athena looked through the glass of the door into the living room of Crick Cabana, where she found Orion Frenlore sitting down on the sofa.

“Well, I guess that text message was certainly right with what they said about him being to my satisfaction.” Athena muttered. She watched him through the glass for a couple of minutes, while also fixing her hair up and tiding up her clothes. The taxi she had travelled in was dirty and left many dust patches on her trousers.

“I wonder what book he’s reading.” Athena wondered to herself and ran around the side of the house to find a window capable enough of looking at the book. She glanced at the title through the window, making out the small words that were presented on the front cover.

“Talon by Julie Kagawa… I don’t know what that book is. Google Search!” Athena announced as she whipped out her phone and punched in the keys that spelled out the book title and the author. She read through the various events that happen in the book, plus the very intriguing blurb.

“Ah… right. Well, let’s get this over with!” Athena uttered as she walked back to the front door. She hid her face through the door once more and peeked in, Orion was still doing what he was doing moments ago.

“Those eyes. I felt like they pierced right through me; that if I didn’t break away now, they would peel me open to see what lay beneath. Deep within, the dragon stirred, growling. She didn’t like this human, I realized. Maybe he scared her, or the intensity of his gaze reminded her of a predator. Or maybe she felt that, if I stared at him much longer, I would lose myself in those stormy eyes and forget all about a certain golden-eyed rogue, waiting for me in the darkness.” Orion read this from the pages that were encased within the leather bound book.

“This book is certainly getting good, but I wonder when Athena will arrive. I feel she should’ve been here by now.” Orion pondered at this and looked towards the door, where he found Athena frozen at the door. He laughed and opened the door, where Athena then walked in.

Orion was instantly taken aback by Athena’s beauty. Their eyes met and they exchanged looks for the first time.

“Well, I guess that text message was right then.” Orion thought to himself. Athena gave Orion a hug and introduced herself to him.

“Hello, my name is Athena Godfrey! I guess we’re supposed to make a baby or whatever?”

“Right… I’m Orion Frenlore. I guess so. But, I think we should at least fall in love first.”

“I agree. It’s like we’re on a speed date, aha!” Athena told Orion and he agreed.

“Should we sit down on the table? We should talk about some… rules.” Orion suggested and they both sat down at the table together.

“I like that book that you’re reading at the moment. I’m a huge fan of Julie Kagawa.” Athena commented, seeming very proud of her comment.

“Ah, so you’ve read the Iron and Steel series?” Orion smirked towards Athena.

“Of course!” Athena said proudly once more, and Orion laughed at her.

“That’s not an actual series! You’re just trying to impress me right?” Orion said and by this point, Athena became embarassed.

“Oh, uh.” Athena got up from the chair and ran into the bedroom and slammed the door behind her. She hid under the blanket and hid herself from the world. Orion knocked the door and walked in, where he then sat on the bed.

“Hey Athena, it’s fine. Honestly, I’ve embarrassed myself more than once as well. Just come out and sit on the table, we still need to sort this baby stuff out.” Orion said and Athena got up from the bed, her black hair all over her face.

“Fine.” She muttered and they both returned back to the table.

“We have to have this child as soon as possible.” Athena suggested, and Orion agreed.

“We also need to raise this child the best we can, and we need to teach it all the necessary skills.” Orion suggested.

“I have an idea, let’s use some of the money we got to buy skill raising items!”

“Sure!” And that’s what they did. Orion and Athena then left to the store and went shopping for skill raising items.

An hour later, they bought a guitar and a computer for inside of the house, three garden planters for the outside of the house as well. Orion placed the guitar and the computer inside the spare bedroom. They later moved onto the sofa where they engaged in a bit of flirting!

Fortunately, they got into a bit of a flirty mood and they both became very attracted to each other. However, there was also a bit of failures.

But, eventually, it led onto…

Orina was finally born! Through many hours of socialisation, they found love within each other and kissed! Unfortunately, both of them became very hungry so Athena had to stop mid-way to go make some food.

“No! Don’t burn! Don’t catch fire!” Athena shouted. Unfortunately, the food did burn and Athena had to throw the food out in the end, which then led Athena to order pizza.

She paid the pizza delivery man and then served it to Orion, who loved the food very much. Meanwhile, Athena started watching the cooking channel to avoid a mishap like what happened, happen again.

Orion walked to Athena as she was watching the cookery show, even though she was distracted, Orion decided to speak to her nevertheless.

“I’m going out to find a job, we won’t be able to support our child if we have no money.” Orion said.

“Ah.. ok.. go ahead.” Athena said, and Orion left without a word. Although, it didn’t stop Athena from watching him leave!

But, what trials face this couple as they will try to bring up their child into this world? Will they be able to keep the secret of The Wonder Child?
